Season in Review: 2015-16

  2015-16 was a slow season for Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.  There were a total of seven.  The previous low total I had researched was 10 in 2012-13, a lock-out shortened season..  Compared to 2014-15, fights per game was down to 0.28 from 0.32 and goals per game down to 2.71 from 2.73.  So this was more a case of the stars not aligning for the GHHTs this year.  Of note, Chris Neil notched his fourth career GHHT while playing in 900th career game.  Alex Petrovic recorded a pair of Hat Tricks on February 9, 2006.  One was the Gordie Howe Hat Trick, another was for fighting the same opponent, Evander Kane, three times during the same game.

Season in Review: 2014-15

  Gordie How Hat Trick were coming fast and furious early in the season.  There were five in both October and November.  Then only another six for the rest of the season.  The 2014-15 Art Ross winner, Jamie Benn, also led the league in the Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.  Benn might be the first player to led the league in points and Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in the same season.  No, Jarome Iginla did not lead the league in GHHTs during his Art Ross season in 2001-02.  I'd have to check on Stan Mikita.  There were two night with two Gordie Howe Hat Tricks, November 13th and February 2nd, but both times they were in separate games.  Steve Pinizzotto scored his first career goal during his Gordie Howe Hat Trick.  Vladimir Tarasenko had his first career fight in this GHHT.  Teams were 20-3-3 when having a Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

Season in Review: 2007-08

  There were 21 Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in 2007-08, including one during the play-offs.  Jarome Iginla extended his lead as the active leader with his eight and ninth career GHHTs.  Jarome, and Sean Avery were the only players to have multiple GHHTs in 2007-08.  Teams with a player having a GHHT went 14-7.  Sidney Crosby earned his first GHHT, which included a fight against Andrew Ferrence of the Boston Bruins.  Tom Kostopoulus completed his GHHT when he instigated a fight against Shane Hnidy of the Bruins with less than 10 minutes in the game.  Rick Nash completed his GHHT with a fight at the end of the game.

Season in Review: 2008-09

  There were 20 GHHTs in 2008-09.  Corey Perry was the only player to have more than one.  Perry had one in the regular season, and one during the play-offs.  There were three nights with two GHHTs, twice by players in different games, and once by teammates.  The teammates were Luke Schenn and Jamal Mayers, who both got a GHHT in a losing cause for the Toronto Maple Leafs.  David Clarkson earned himself a GHHT and then a few weeks later was the fight opponent for Brent Seabrook`s GHHT.  Teams with GHHTs were 16-4, including 2-0 in the play-offs.

Season in Review; 1980-81

   There were 49 regular season Gordie Howe Hat Tricks plus another 13 during the play-offs in 1980-81.  Bob Bourne, Tim Higgins, Rick Middleton, Dave Taylor and Ryan Walter each had two during the regular season.  Rick Middleton was a finalist for the Lady Byng in 1980-81 and had a total of 16 PIM.  Tim Higgins had two in three games.  Dave Taylor had both of his against the Colorado Rockies.  Brian Sutter had two during the play-offs, both during a five game series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Ron Flockhart and Michel Galarneau scored their first career goal during their GHHT.  During the play-offs, on April 9, 1981, the Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars combined for three GHHTs, with Brad Maxwell and Bobby Smith of the Stars, along with Brad Park of the Bruins notching GHHTs.  Park and Smith fought each other during the game.  It was the only time in 1980-81, players earning a GHHT had the fight against each other in the same game.  In another play-off game, Michel Goulet and Peter Stastny both each had a natural GHHT during the third period.  In that game, the Quebec Nordiques beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0. The Detroit Red Wings were the only team without a GHHT, while the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks were the only teams without a GHHT against them.  The record of teams with a GHHT was 47-12-3, for a .782 win percentage.

  I researched the 1980-81 season using the hockey summary project, along with hockeyfights.com and dropyourgloves.com.  On some specific GHHTs, or non-GHHTs, I gather information via google searches.

Update:
Special thanks to trottiertobossy and Eric Hornick for helping me research a potential GHHT by Dennis Potvin.  On December 16/1980, an altercation occurred between Denis Potvin and Tim Trimper.  It was listed as a fight by Hockeyfights.com but Trimper was noted as not receiving a fighting major.  Any newspaper articles I found on the game didn't mention the actual penalties.  I had already removed 2 GHHTs when researching altercations between two players where one doesn't receive a major and this one became the third.  trottiertobossy posted a fan's scorecard from the game that lists Potvin's major as a butt-ending major. 

Season in Review: 2009-10

  There were 18 Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in 2009-10.  Leading the league was Chris Stewart, who was the only player to score multiple GHHTs.  The first GHHT went to enforcer Brain McGrattan and enforcer Chris Neil wrapped up the season with a GHHT.  Fedor Tyutin had a natural GHHT againsty the Ducks and Ryan Getzlaf.  The fight capped completed Tyutin's GHHT while it started Getzlaf's.  Teams with a GHHT went 13-5.  Nine players got their 1st career GHHT while Jarome Iginla stretched his lead among active players with his 10th.  Three times there were GHHTs on back-to-back nights.  There were none during the play-offs.

2012-13: Season in Review

  This blog has not been updated lately.  I haven't check in a while either to see if there was another
blog or site dedicated to Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.  If there is, leave a note in the comments.
  In a lockout shortened 2012-13, there were 10 GHHTs including one during the playoffs.  Four players earned their first, while Brenden Morrow notched his sixth in his career.  The league leader was Wayne Simmons who had a busy week in February, grabbing two in three games.  Brenden Dillion scored his first career goal then same game he earned his first GHHT.  Teams were 10-1 when a player had a GHHT, with the one loss being Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs.

2008-09: Season in Review

  The 2008-09 season had 20 Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.  Corey Perry had two GHTs, one in the regular season and one in the play-offs.  Fourteen players had their first career GHT.  Brent Seabrook capped off his first career GHT by scoring the game winner in overtime.  Teams who had a player go Gordie won 80% of their games.  In one of the losses, the Toronto Maple Leafs had two players, Jamal Mayers and Luke Schenn both get a Gordie Howe Hat Trick, but the Leafs still lost the game, 8-5 vs the Philadelphia Flyers.  There were 69 three goal Hat Tricks in the NHL in 2008-09.

1992-93: Season in Review

  You'd have to assume there would be more Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in 1992-93 as opposed to recent seasons.  That was back when the NHL entertained with lots of hits and lots of fights.  There were 35 GHTs in 92-93.  Three players tied for the league led with two Gordie Howe Hat Tricks; Rick Tocchet, Rob Pearson and Rob Brind'Amour.  Brind'Amour had two career Gordie Howe Hat Tricks, both in the 92-93 season.  Steve Yzerman had a 5 point night when he grabbed his Gordie Howe Hat Trick.  Both Yzerman and Rob Blake were a fight away from a Double GHT; 2 goals, 2 assists, 2 fights.  Teammates, Chris Chelios and Steve Smith, pulled off a Double-D GHT, when both defencemen got a GHT in the same game.  There were three games which two players achieved a GHT.  Teams with a GHT were 26-6-3, good for a .831 win percentage.  There were 112 three goal hat tricks in 1992-93, more than twice as many when compared to 2011-12.

  Perhaps the most surprising name not on the list is the modern day leader in Gordie Howe Hat Tricks, Brendan Shanahan.  Shanahan cut back on his fighting in 1992-93, fighting only once and recording zero Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in 1992-93.

2009-10: Season in Review

 The 2009-10 season marked the last time a player had multiple Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in a single season, as Chris Stewart had two GHTs, including a natural GHT.  Overall, there were 18 Gordie Howe Hat Tricks.  Ian Laperriere got his 5th career GHT in his final season.  9 players got thier first career GHT, including enforcers Dan Carcillo, Jared Boll and Brian McGratton.   On March 9th, 2010, Ryan Getzlaf and Fedor Tyutin, fought each.  The fight gave Tyutin a Natural GHT and it kicked off Getzlaf's GHT.  Teams that had a player with a GHT, won 13 and lost 5.  There were 73 three goal hat tricks that season.

2010-11: Season in Review

  There were 16 GHTs in the 2010-11 season, including one in the play-offs.  13 players recorded their 1st GHT.  Pavel Datsyuk got his first GHT on his first regular season fight in his career.  Ryan White's first career goal propelled him to his first career GHT.  Taylor Hall's first GHT was also his first career fight, which led to his first career season-ending injury.  Teams that had a player "Go Gordie" were a perfect 16-0 in those games.
